Score the smooth part of the bolt with a file or hacksaw or grinder so the epoxy has something to grab.  No risk to the stone that way.

Rounding the edges proved very time consuming, even with a grinder and a fairly coarse stone.  I chickened out when a chunk flew out of the base, so all I'll do now is sand, sand, sand, and polish.  I'm down to 400 grit now, with a long way to go.

I used JB Weld last night to cement the hanger bolt in the stone.  I think it's a bit off of vertical, so I'll have to carefully rest stone on the stick when that stage is ready to epoxy, but use wax paper or foil to avoid epoxying the stone permanently to the stick.  That way, the stone will be flush with the top of the stick when screwed all the way down.
