Score the smooth part of the bolt with a file or hacksaw or grinder so the epoxy has something to grab.  No risk to the stone that way.

Great idea Rodney!  I did just that!

Rounding the edges proved very time consuming, even with a grinder and a fairly coarse stone.  I chickened out when a chunk flew out of the base, so all I'll do now is sand, sand, sand, and polish.  I'm down to 400 grit now, with a long way to go.

I used JB Weld last night to cement the hanger bolt in the stone.  I think it's a bit off of vertical, so I'll have to carefully rest stone on the stick when that stage is ready to epoxy, but use wax paper or foil to avoid epoxying the stone permanently to the stick.  That way, the stone will be flush with the top of the stick when screwed all the way down.

Finally, weather and honey-do's permitted progress. Awaiting one more pin to embed, and then more sanding prior to finishing.

Finally, Rocky Top is finished!  Lots of options for field trips and for an upcoming trip to Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park, east of Santa Cruz.  I can use the scope for viewing scenery and wildlife at a distance, or stabilize my camera for better photos.  I can even mount my iPhone for tracking our location or photography.

I'll try to figure out how to rotate these images.

The branding iron will require a lot more practice.  I had to touch up the burn freehand with a wood-burner.

Very nice work!

I like the multi-function aspect too.
